Most plant references in the Bible are very vague with the exception of a few references to the date palm, olive, pomegranate, fig, and grape vines. The identity of plants and trees is obvious, because of its fruits that occur, but precisely the identity of plants could not easily make up that Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish physician, suggested that rules on names of plants in the early 1700's.

Perhaps the reason for the Rumor has it the wild cherry tree was the wood of the cross, the crucifixion is the fact that the four white bracts (flowers) are the shape of a cross. This similarity of a white cross shaped flowers occur in many species of trees and flowers, of course, not be given any weight of evidence from the wood of the dogwood tree being the substance of crucifixions by the high priest and the Roman rulers.
