I know of no accurate way to test the chains home methods. A litmus test is the best way to find out. A jeweler must do this on a very small price.

If gold plated, not gold through and through the plate eventually wear out and tarnish chains in these areas. If one bronze as the metal is below, the bright color of gold when it is close and could be difficult to know the difference until blur happens. There are several ways I've seen suggested for proofs of origin, but I can recommend as being reliable.

Acid tests are performed by two methods. In one case, a little of the subject that is rubbed on a small blackboard "stone of test" rubbing hard enough to remove some metal from the surface of the item. In a knowledge-carat gold is also rubbed on the stone. The acid is placed in the marks and observed. If the sample is dissolved immediately, not gold. If the sample is maintained, the color is compared with the effects on acid known samples and that is assigned an approximate value carats. The proof is rather what is not to say gold near the karat of gold.

The other method is to make a mark on the jewelry in a place that shows very little. The brand must pass through the surface and slightly into the metal. The acid is applied. If not the gold, the metal is usually a metal base containing copper and acid with a green bubble. This is a gift that gold is not subject to the core. If the item is gold, the test may leave a dark tarnished looking opaque spot or a place in the metal. This can be polished and brought to a shiny surface.

The jeweler may be incorrect to say that the chains are too light in color and very bright for gold. Gold can be as bright or dull as the factory wants to. The color depends on the karat gold, with some color variations in the same karat gold depending on the actual recipe used to make gold suitable for jewelry.

What concerns the jeweler is the look of the chain typical heavy, stamped 14k with no makers mark, gold plated and not solid gold. We see these ever so often. These strings have a look faky, brilliant, but not well done. I've seen so many fakes are fairly easy to spot, but a test that really needed to be sure.

As for prices, I dare not quote a price based on weight only. There are too many other factors play, such as the quality of the item in the first place. The production quality varies very thin to really cheaply produced items, made to sell at lower prices.

Find a stamp of manufacturers on items you have. To meet with federal law, the karat mark should be there, along with brand manufacturers. The seal of carats alone, without the manufacturers mark is a sign of dishonesty. The mark is required to hold the manufacturer responsible for the karat mark to be true and accurate. Karat A seal must not be placed on an item, but if the brand of manufacturers is required by law.
