If I had one hundred pounds for every time someone told me that transcription services would soon be obsolete and everyone would be using recognition software voice, I need to run a business! However, I am firmly convinced that the voice recognition software in its current form is not a substitute for transcription services. But then I would say, no I? Here are some reasons why they are not convinced that going to replace me yet.

Voice recognition software currently comes in two forms – Dragon Naturally Speaking and IBM ViaVoice. Besides being used to give computer commands (eg to save a file) can also be used to convert direct speech to a Word document. However, the main disadvantage is that the recognition software Voice is a "dog of a master" only. You can use the program successfully for dictation, but can not meet even one-on-one interviews and probably enter in difficulty if you tried to group meetings or focus groups. The software must be trained to get used to one voice. Asking him to recognize and transcribe accurately voice different from your interviewee, as well as their own questions, or the many voices of a group is simply not possible at this time. Even with a voice dictation, software still needs to be corrected and trained to recognize new and unfamiliar words or technical terms or names.

The only way to use software speech recognition effectively for an interview situation would be to listen to the recording and return to talk all you hear – both questions and answers. Obviously, this would be a long time, having to stop and start recording so that you can speak what you're listening. Essentially, you are trying to perform simultaneous translation – focusing on listening to another person speaks, while saying these words a few seconds, but without losing what is said next. Try with a recorded TV or radio program and see how hard it is a skill to master. Add in time to final review and sort the Word document and it becomes clear that would take much longer than the duration of the original interview, and not different from the time spent by a professional transcriber to complete the transcript. Is a valuable and productive use of your time? Extend the time and effort many times over when he tried to cope with 'talk' to a focus group, especially if the recording is less clear.

Another important factor when considering the voice recognition software is its inability to judge what homonyms should be used. Latest versions are apparently now able to recognize the most common in simple sentences, such as deciding whether or not his. However, long and complicated sentences can defeat it. All this adds to the time correction at the end. It is also necessary to consider how to deal with software commands punctuation or formatting of certain words in bold, for example. Most programs require you to leave a pause between the command and the next part of 'text'. If the pause is not enough, find the commands entered as part of the text itself, which will be published later. For an interview format, you must indicate a change of speaker with a new line and the initials, and a command of the tab. Even if you just decide to enter a change of speaker in a new line and clean up after, this all adds to the time it takes. Apparently one of the latest versions (Naturally Speaking) also scored for you – to decide where all the commas and dots and go beyond. Be prepared to correct this afternoon – the idea of punctuation is not mine!

"Naturally Speaking, so to speak, I'm biased! But I convinced that the voice recognition software is a useful tool for setting a specific purpose, but it still is a transcript of all recordings in all circumstances.
