Green Opal/
/Does anyone know the name of a purple gemstone that changes color in different lighting conditions?

Not a amythyst or opal. It is a purple stone that changes in blue or red, and sometimes has green spots on it. I have a ring like that, but I can not think of the name of the stone. Any gemologists or jewelers out there?

This really is better if you have a picture to show. (If you do, send me a message on my 360). But what you described, I suspect they may have a Topaz that has been coated to produce this type of effect (the trade name – Mystic Topaz) or a synthetic color change corundum (Sc). Mystic Topaz is essentially colorless Topaz that has been producing a layer of iridescent effect. This is very similar to some glass beads or glass stones that can lead have seen in craft stores. Mystic Topaz can come in any color depending on the given layer. Although most of the stones are covered in the flag (of base) of the stone, some are also covered in the table. Some of the best stones produced (such as nitrogen TM) are durable and will resist scratching. Others and the coating may come with a light scratch of a leaf or a needle. Synthetic color change sapphires are typically bright green changing to purple and red under incandescent (yellow) lighting. They were meant to simulate alexandrite. If the stone is not cut in the right direction, some "bleeding" color is produced. ie you can see all three colors at once. I hope that helps!
