What is the official history of Valentine's Day, and there is some mythology online?

Valentine's Day is a day holiday celebrated on February 14. In North America and Europe, is the traditional day when lovers declare their love to each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or sale items. The festival is named after two Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages when the tradition of cutting the love blossomed. Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. Until 1969, the Catholic Church formally recognized eleven Valentine's Days. The honor of Saint Valentine on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus Presber. Romae m.): a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about the year 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are in the church of San Praxair in Rome and in Carmelite Street Whitefriar Church in Dublin, Ireland. Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae): He became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about the year 197 and said to have died during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian [citation needed]. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location the Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni (Basilica di San Valentino). The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing else is known about him. The Emperor supposedly did grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius learned of this, Valentine was arrested and thrown in jail. In a embellishment of The Golden Legend, on the eve of St. Valentine was executed, wrote the first "Valentine" himself, addressed to a young identified as his lover, the jailer's daughter who had befriended and healed, or both. It was a note saying "From your Valentine." In another modern decoration in appearance, while Valentine was imprisoned, people leaving little notes, folded and hidden in crevices in the rocks around his cell. Find them and offer prayers for them.
