Gold Size

I saw my first example of painting gold leaf hanging in the shop of a friend of mine had been used successfully as a great background to a sunset.

Using gold leaf in the painting is not simply by the blade on top of the painting, I use various colored glazes on top of the leaf and the light is reflected in these areas so that not just a paint color.

Using gold leaf, imitation gold leaf or paint really open a new variety of effects.

For example, I mentioned the use of various colored glazes that can be rubbed back if necessary, as the paint is dry weather at the top of the page. I found that a very pleasing effect can be obtained by using as a glaze burnt umber, and rubbing the right side, which creates a great atmosphere.

A favorite gold leaf paint mine takes the form of a large abstract wall panel.

I first seal the wood panel that I'm working, this seal can take the form of a layer or two of lacquer, or a layer of Armenian bole, a finely ground red ocher pigment, this pigment produces a true color base upon which to lay the sheet.

The natural aging effect can be emulated by allowing small bits of the red base coat to see through.

After the timber has been sealed and has dried it is then time to lay the gold leaf imitation.

You need a sticker to get the box to stick to the table wood, this adhesive is called a size. I have always used shellac in size, but many people use an oil size is a question of what were acquired.

Shellac dries very quickly so that treatment of 1 square foot at a time, I brush on the size and give it a minute to be sticky. The sheet has to be applied by the blade. There is no getting around the fact that you need not know how to handle gold leaf. I use a cotton pad with a small amount Vaseline.

The road joins the slightly sticky surface, the sheet is then transferred to the round in which adheres to rigid size.

It leaves everything to dry completely, brush loose gold leaf, then seal the blade of a varnish or lacquer basis of a clear oil, I prefer shellac for this so blonde shellac wax has a beautiful golden yellow color that enhances the color of the leaf.

Several other finishes can be applied over gold leaf concern that the aging and distressed finishes.
